A. Coste Occidentale d'Afrique, Depuis le XIe. Degre de Latitude Meridionale, Jusqu'au Cap de Bonne Esperance..., from La Harpe's Histoire Generale des Voyages, dated 1739, hand color (10.4 x 9.8"). This map covers the southwestern coast of Africa extending from Benguela to the Cape of Good Hope, presenting coastal detail only. It extends west to include St. Helena island. Adorned with a decorative title cartouche and a compass rose. Condition: Issued folding with light offsetting. A binding trim at lower left has been replaced with old paper. (B+)
B. Cite de Loango, Tiree de Dapper, from Prevost's Histoire Generale des Voyages, circa 1755, black & white (11.9 x 8.8"). This nicely detailed bird's-eye view depicts the city of Buali or Mbanza Loango in the present-day Republic of Congo. It is based on an engraving by Olivier Dapper. A key below the title identifies the king's palace, court, gardens, and other important sites. The foreground is filled with scenes of daily life and ceremony, including an execution. Condition: A crisp impression. (A)
