This is an autographed letter signed by General Fitz John Porter, the Union general who was court-martialed for his actions at the Second Battle of Bull Run. It is dated March 23, 1871, and is addressed to General William B. Franklin, a friend of Porter's since his days as an instructor at West Point. In the letter, Porter writes, "I will send my pistol up -- gladly availing myself of your offer." This may be a reference to Franklin's position as the Vice President at the Colt Firearm Manufacturing Company. Handwritten on a sheet with a Spring Mountain Coal Company (Broadway, N.Y.) letterhead. The lot includes a newspaper clipping titled "The Vindication of Gen. Fitz John Porter," featuring correspondence from Porter, General Alfred H. Terry, and General Ulysses S. Grant seeking the annulment of Porter's court-martial.
