This book, by Scott D. Westrem, focuses on the Hereford Map, one of the largest surviving examples of medieval mappamundi from around 1300. The Hereford Map depicts the inhabited world with Jerusalem at the center and resides at Hereford Cathedral in Hereford, England. This book discusses the history of the map, its sources, and current scholarship on the interpretations of the map. Of particular interest are over 1,000 inscriptions and figures on the map, which this book explains in great detail with line for line transcriptions of each along with English translations. There are 24 pages of full-color photographs of the Hereford Map, as well as a separate folding insert with a full reproduction of the map at approximately 40% of its actual size. An incredibly detailed and thorough examination of this important piece of medieval cartography. 476 pp. Hardbound with pictorial covers.
