These two maps focused on the American Southwest were published in Petermann's Geographische Mittheilungen.> The first depicts the routes from Wheeler's expedition, while the second shows an interesting overlay of ancient Aztec civilization on current settlement. Each is drawn in the typical, precise German style with very detailed topography and watershed.

Dr. Augustus Herman Petermann's Geographische Mittheilungen was the oldest German trade magazine dedicated to geography. First published in 1855, the magazine covered many of the important discoveries of the 19th and 20th century until its end in 1937. Published by Justus Perthes in Gotha.
