This stunning French map of South America spans four sheets. It shows the continent in enormous detail including rivers, villages and towns, mountains, political boundaries, and very fine coastal detail. A large inset on the lower right sheet continues Argentina on the same scale to include Tierra del Fuego, the Straits of Magellan, and the Falkland Islands. The upper right sheet has the title in decorative lettering with fancy flourishes. There is a legend on the bottom left sheet that identifies colonial holds with hand color including Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch, English, and French possessions. This is the revised and updated version of 1818. Includes Ch. Picquet's engraved and embossed seal to the right of the title cartouche. Dissected and mounted on linen. If joined, the map would measure approximately 52.4 x 42.8". A rarely encountered set of matching elephant folio maps from this scarce atlas.
