This fascinating map is from the first printed atlas relating exclusively to America. Wytfliet's work was referred to as a continuation of Ptolemy, despite the fact that there was little connection with Ptolemy except for his name on the title page. Wytfliet compiled his atlas using multiple published sources, including Ramusio, Hakluyt and De Bry. This map covers Colombia, Panama and part of Venezuela. Several important colonial settlements are named and located, including Cartago, Victoria, Cartagena, and Panama (City). Decorative title cartouche at upper left. This was published in either Wytfliet's Descriptionis Ptolemaicae Augmentum or Histoire Universelle des Indes Occidentales et Orientales…

A nice impression on a lightly toned sheet with a few small spots and a printer's crease near the centerfold. There are a few short tears in the top blank margin, the longest of which is adjacent to the centerfold and has been repaired with old paper on verso. There is a short centerfold separation in the bottom blank margin.
