This engraving is one of the few visual records of an ordinary service at St. Pauls Cathedral in London in the early 18th century. The view shows the taking of communion and demonstrates the strict separation of the sexes at the time. Clergy in residence (but no officiating) sit in the lower stalls at left, with other men filling the remaining lower stalls. Women are relegated to the upper stalls, which had separate entrances from the lower stalls. Published in Ceremonies et Coutumes Religieuses de Tous les Peuples du Monde by Jean Frederic Bernard in Amsterdam.
