This finely engraved map by Girolamo Porro shows the island of Santorini, in the Aegaen Sea north of Crete. It is adorned with a title cartouche and unique compass rose and set in a full sheet of Italian text ( 8.4 x 11.9"). Porcacchi's L'Isole piu Famose del Mondo was published in seven editions beginning in 1572, and was one of the last island atlases published, following the works of Buondelmonti, Sonetti and Bordone. This map first appeared in the 1576 edition.
