This map was included in the December 13, 1856 issue to illustrate the "Kansas question" of whether Kansas should be admitted as a Free or Slave state. Free states are shown in white, slave states in black, and unsettled territories are "tinted" (gray). The beginning of an article on the "Battlefield of Freedom in America" is just above the map.
