A. Citizens & Travelers Guide Map in. to and from the City of New York and Adjacent Places, by D.A. Edsall & Co., dated 1877 (19.1 x 26.1"). A detailed map of southern Manhattan covering the area from Central Park south to The Battery. The map locates ferries, railroads, places of amusement and many stores, including Tiffany, Brooks Brothers and Lord & Taylor. Overprinted to show location of Pennsylvania Railroad Depots and Ticket Offices. Rear cover and verso of map show “Presented By Pennsylvania Railroad Company.” Folds into gilt-stamped stiff paper wrappers. Condition: A clean and bright example with several short splits at the fold junctions with some associated minor loss. Covers are lightly worn and creased.
B. New Map of New York City. From the Latest Surveys Showing All the Ferries and Steamship Docks, Elevated, Electric and Cross Town Car Lines, by Brooks Bank Note Co., circa 1890 (12.1 x 19.3"). Another detailed map of southern Manhattan showing the street grid pattern and "all the Ferries and Steamship Docks, Elevated, Electric and Cross Town Car Lines." The map was issued with compliments of the Broadway Central Hotel, which is prominently located on the map. Text on verso promotes the hotel which is famous as the location of the formation of the Major League’s National League in 1876, the murder of financier James Fisk in 1872, and the residence of Arnold Rothstein, the “fixer” of the 1919 World Series and inspiration for a character in The Great Gatsby. In its early days it was the largest hotel in New York City. Condition: Issued folding with some light toning mostly along the sheet edges.
