A. Fretum Magellani, by Mercator/Hondius, from Atlas Minor, circa 1607 (6.8 x 4.9"). Splendid little map featuring the Strait of Magellan. The map is centered on a large, finely engraved, compass rose and further embellished with strapwork title and distance scale cartouches. Latin text on verso. Condition: A crisp impression with marginal toning and an old stamp in the lower right sheet corner. (A)
B. Freti Magellanici ac Novi Freti Vulgo Le Maire Exactissima Delineatio, by Mercator/Jansson, from Atlas Minor, circa 1648 (7.5 x 5.2"). This strongly engraved small map covers the tip of South America showing both the Strait of Magellan and Le Maire Strait. Engraved to show the rugged mountainous terrain and treacherous sea passages. There is a Latin note near Patagonia about the giants in the region who are ten feet tall! Engraved by Pieter van den Keere (Petrus Kaerius) and decorated with fine title and scale cartouches. German text on verso, published from 1648-51. Condition: Light toning. (B+)
