This is one of the later editions of Colton's pocket maps of the United States, dated 1878 but with a copyright date of 1872. All state and territorial boundaries are set except for Dakota, which has not split, and Oklahoma is still divided between Indian Territory and the Public Lands in its panhandle. Railroads dominate the landscape with full transcontinental service on at least three routes. Folds into original black embossed cloth covered boards with gilt title on cover.

Issued folding on a bright sheet with a few faint spots and minor staining where the map was glued to the rear cover. Front board is slightly bent at bottom right.
