This 50-page promotional guidebook was issued by the California Immigrant Union and is filled with facts and information designed to entice emigrants to the state. There were a number of editions of this pamphlet published throughout the 1870s, with this being the sixth edition. It is particularly noteworthy for the inclusion of a detailed folding map of the state based upon George Goddard's map of 1858. A late edition, this map depicts the entire state and extends to include almost all of Nevada and portions of Oregon and Idaho. Compiled from numerous sources, the map locates existing railroads, proposed railroads, topography, drainage, settlements, ranchos, and more. Text by John Hittell. Bound in printed paper wrappers (5.9 x 8.8").
References: cf. Howes #C-36.
Condition: B+
The folding map is trimmed to the border at top and bottom with some light offsetting and minor foxing. Text is lightly toned. Paper wrappers have minor soiling.
