A. Russia in Asia, by John Tallis, from Illustrated Atlas and Modern History of the World, circa 1850 (12.8 x 10.0"). This decorative steel engraved map covers the region from the Urals to Kamtchatka with good detail. The beautifully engraved vignettes include Troitsk, Kamtchatkan dogs, Skorskarskoi Pagost, and a striking scene of men and dogs being attacked by a giant bear. It is surrounded by a delicately engraved and decorative border. The illustrations were drawn by H. Warren and engraved by J.H. Kernot; the map was drawn and engraved by J. Rapkin. Condition: Contemporary outline color with a small portion of the border trimmed away at top. (B+)
B. The Russian Empire in Europe and Asia, by Robert Wilkinson, from A General Atlas..., dated 1814 (13.3 x 8.8"). This handsome map extends from the Gulf of Bothnia to Kamchatka. It identifies political divisions and place names and includes some nice detail of rivers and mountain ranges. According to a note at top left, European governments are named after their capital towns, which are distinguished by font and symbol. A newly discovered fragment of coast is noted to the northeast of the mouths of the Lena River. Engraved by E. Bourne. Condition: Contemporary color with some minor toning and a short edge tear in the bottom blank margin that has been closed with archival tape on verso. (A)
