This striking map of Southeast Asia is drawn in Coronelli's unmistakable, elegant style, and represents the most accurate European knowledge of the region at the end of the 17th century. There is little inland detail with the exception of a few rivers, however the coastlines are dotted with place names and the routes of trading ships are illustrated with dashed lines. Coronelli's map marked improvements in the depiction of the southern coast of Java, the western coast of Sumatra, and the eastern coast of Borneo. The map extends to include the northern coastline of Australia (Nuova Hollanda) based on the discoveries by Abel Tasman. The drape-style title cartouche is held aloft by mer-people, and a strapwork cartouche with distance scales balances the composition.
