This complete set of two maps and three prints is based upon the five murals created by painter N.C. Wyeth which decorate Hubbard Memorial Hall, the National Geographic Society's first formal library. While the maps themselves are based upon modern information and political boundaries, the style and decorative elements are characteristic of 16th century maps including depictions of Zeus, Poseidon, a wind head, and several explorers. The three prints beautifully depict Columbus on uncharted seas, his discovery of the New World, and Richard Byrd's flight to the North Pole. The murals were part of National Geographic Magazine's "The Romance of Discovery", and these prints served as the frontispieces to the March, May, July, November and December 1928 magazine issues.
