This charming cartoon map of New Mexico was designed and drawn by James Hall and is filled with whimsical figures and puns. There is a bed frame depicted near Gallup with a man saying "Those lava beds aren't really good to sleep on." Another man looks questioningly at stakes in the ground labeled "staked plains." An alligator juniper cactus is illustrated as a real alligator. The map shows the major roads (in blue), towns and scenic sites, many of which are also illustrated. The map was included in T.M. Pearce's Cartoon Guide of New Mexico, which was part of a series of cartoon guides of various cities and states published by J.J. Augustin in New York City. The guidebook is not included with this example.
