This pocket map of the state was issued only months before West Virginia began its secession from Virginia. County configurations are current to 1860, with the addition of Webster County in present-day central West Virginia. Highly detailed, the map presents towns, cities, railroads, canals, and wagon roads. Includes inset maps of Richmond and Norfolk at top. Folds into brown cloth boards (3.5 x 4.9") with gilt title on the front cover.
Signed in the top margin by Dr. Heard of the 13th Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteers, who was stationed at Camp Hamilton near Darnestown, Maryland (on the Virginia border) on September 20th, 1861. Manuscript lines on the map likely indicate his regiment's movement into Northern Virginia.

Very good with light toning where the map was glued to the board and in the top right corner. There is a tiny hole in the bottom blank margin and manuscript signature in the top margin. Covers are lightly worn.
