This elegantly engraved miniature map of the continent appeared in an early edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica. It includes political divisions, place names, rivers, and other topographical details. Near its center is the mythical lake Xarayes, falsely identified as the source of the Paraguay River. A fragment of island to the southwest of Tierra del Fuego is noted as a "Port discovered by Sir Fra. Drake." North of Easter island is a small partial landmass labeled "Land seen by an Englishman in 1636." A small stretch of Terra Australis is located in the southeast corner of the map.
