This lot includes 6 views (on 5 sheets) of Crete during a time of great conflict and upheaval related to the Cretan War (1645–69) and the Morean War (1684-99).

A. Haven en Vesting van Suda [on verso] [Eilant en Vesting. Van Karabusa], by Olivier Dapper, from Naukeurige Beschryving der Eilanden in de Archipel der Middelantsche Zee, circa 1688 (6.2 x 4.9"). This striking bird's-eye view depicts Souda Bay on the northwest coast of Crete with numerous ships in the natural harbor and mountains in the background. A compass rose orients north to the left. On verso is a nicely detailed view of the fortress at Gramvousa. The fortress was surrendered to the Ottoman Turks during the Morean War in 1691, just a few years after the view was published. On a full sheet of Dutch text that measures 9.4 x 14.9". Reference: Shirley (BL Atlases) G.DAPP-5a #45 & 46. Condition: A crisp impression with marginal soiling, well away from engraved images. (A)

B. Porta Suda in Candia, by Joannes Peeters, circa 1665 (10.5 x 4.1"). This handsome panoramic view shows a battle in the harbor of Souda Bay. Drawn by Peeters, engraved by Lucas Vorstermans, and printed by Gaspar Huberti. Condition: A nice impression on a sheet with a Strasburg Lily watermark. (A)

C. Porta Suda Paleo in Candia, by Joannes Peeters, circa 1665 (10.4 x 4.1"). Another view of Souda Bay during wartime, this one drawn from a slightly different vantage. Drawn and printed by Peeters and engraved by Vorstermans. Condition: A crisp impression with marginal soiling. (A)

D. La Citta di Candia, by Joannes Peeters, circa 1665 (10.4 x 4.2"). This small but stunning view of the city of Candia (present-day Heraklion) features impressive detail of the city's architecture and fortifications. Drawn by Peeters and engraved by Couer. Lauwers. Condition: A sharp impression on a lightly toned sheet with light soiling that is mostly confined to the margins and remnants of tape on verso. (B+)

E. Canea, by Joannes Peeters, circa 1665 (10.5 x 4.1"). This beautiful engraving of Chania includes nice renderings of the old Venetian fortifications. Drawn by Peeters and engraved by Vorstermans.
