This geological profile extends to nearly 10 feet long and shows the geology and topography along George William Featherstonhaugh's exploring route. His journey by horseback took him through a large swath of the eastern United States extending from New Jersey to Tennessee, north to Illinois, and finally south to Texas. The profile shows mountains, place names, and is color-coded to show 10 different geological types. It served as the frontispiece to Featherstonhaugh's first report as U.S. Geologist, a title he proudly displays on the title page and end of the report. 97 pages. Octavo, hardbound in quarter maroon leather over pebbled green boards. Printed by Gales & Seaton.

This example includes the inscription “Royal Society of Edinburgh Presented by the Author.”
