This map of Placer County by George Mathis graphically depicts the mountainous topography in and around the county, which lies just to the west of Lake Tahoe. Placer County was an important destination during the Gold Rush, and the map marks the locations of mines, the Emigrant Trail, and ghost towns. Historical landmarks and other points of interest are shown, including Palisades (formerly Squaw Valley) ski resort, which is marked with the image of a downhill skier. On verso is an elevation map and additional helpful information for tourists.
