This graphic poster celebrates the booming San Francisco music scene during its heyday in the late 1960s. Viewed from the Marin Headlands, the city is depicted as a singular hill with buildings stacked on top of one another. Locates and names several venues in the city including the Fillmore, Haight Theatre, Western Front, Avalon Ballroom, and more. Notable bands identified include the Grateful Dead, Moby Grape, Big Brother and the Holding Company, with a large Jefferson Airplane dropping flowers on the city. Banners of "peace" and "love" are draped over the city while a "Hate!" flag flies over Alcatraz Island. Across the Bay, the Marin Headlands are filled with tents and a "Hippy Summer Camp" sign. Drawn by Jim Michaelson and published by Trend Graphics in San Jose.
Jim Michaelson was a pioneer of rock art. He produced a wide array of album covers and posters for bands and venues (several of which are featured on this poster). Soon after this poster was made, Michaelson began working for Disney, creating a broad range of art for their theme park attractions over the next 30 years.
