This view shows the early Spanish settlement at Pensacola in 1743, from Santa Rosa Island looking south from inside the bay. This is the first eyewitness view of Pensacola. Tirion's engraving is based on a drawing by Frenchman Dominic Serres. Tirion's Hedendaagsche Historie was initially conceived as the Dutch edition of Thomas Salmon's Modern History. The work began in 1729, but the text was later expanded and the Hedendaagsche Historie was therefore not completed until 1803.
