A. A Map of the Dutch Settlements of Surinam, Demerary, Issequibo, Berbices, and the Islands of Curassoa, Aruba, Bonaire, &c...., by John Lodge, from Political Magazine, dated 1781 (14.4 x 10.6"). This nicely engraved map shows the northern part of South America, spanning the coast from Venezuela to the mouth of the Amazon. It extends to include some nearby islands, including Grenada and Trinidad and Tobago. There is good detail of the watershed in the region, and interesting notations appear throughout the map. A couple notations reference the explorations of Charles Marie de La Condamine in 1743 and 1744. La Condamine is best known for producing the first map of the Amazon based on astro-geodetic observations. This map is rarely seen on the market. Published in the May 1781 issue of Political Magazine. Reference: Jolly #POL-26. Condition: Issued folding, now flat, on watermarked paper, with a couple small stains, light offsetting, and a binding trim in the top right margin that has been replaced with old paper. (B+)

B. Venezuela, New Granada, Equador, and the Guayanas, by John Tallis, from Illustrated Atlas and Modern History of the World, circa 1850 (13.0 x 9.8"). This beautiful and finely engraved steel plate map of northern South America is decorated with vignettes including a panorama of Paramaribo from the sea, a waterfall of the Bogota River, ostriches, and Chimborazo. The map is drawn and engraved by John Rapkin, and the illustrations are drawn by H. Winkles and engraved by W. Lacey. Condition: On a slightly toned sheet with a couple minor spots and short edge tears in the blank margins. (A)
