Splendid map of Provence featuring the Mediterranean coast from the Camargue to Nice, including Marseilles, Toulon, and Avignon. Crisply engraved and detailed throughout with hundreds of tiny towns, political boundaries, and pictorial mountains. Two decorative cartouches fill the Mediterranean, adorned with putti, a blank coat of arms, and an armillary sphere. The map was based on Nicolas Sanson's work, and is signed "Mr. Samson Geographe du Roy" with "Sanson" spelled incorrectly, and was published in Jansson's Novus Atlas. German text on verso, published between 1644-58.
References: Van der Krogt (Vol. I) #4700:1C.

Full contemporary color with light toning and foxing, a few small cracks and a tiny hole in the cartouche at bottom right that have been closed on verso with archival tape, and a short centerfold separation in the bottom blank margin that has been archivally repaired.
