A. Languedoc, by Jan Jansson, circa 1645 (21.1 x 18.3"). This striking map depicts southern France, including the French Riviera from Saulec and Narbone to just east of the mouth of the Rhone, with the cities of Avignon and Arles. It is decorated with a sailing ship, compass rose, title and distance scale cartouches, and a fine coat of arms. Blank verso, from either Nouveau Theatre du Monde (1645-46) or Nouvel Atlas (1646-49). Reference: Van der Krogt (Vol. I) #4650:1. Condition: A nice impression with contemporary outline color with minor toning around the centerfold. There are some edge tears, including a few that enter into the map image, many of which have been closed on verso with archival materials. Chips in the top and bottom left blank margins have been replaced with old paper. (B)

B. Partie Orientale du Gouvernement General de Languedoc, by Delisle/Covens & Mortier, circa 1730 (18.3 x 22.6"). This is the eastern sheet of the Covens & Mortier issue of Delisle's two-sheet map of southern France, with its own title and borders. Its focus is the Languedoc-Roussillon region, spanning from Perpignan east to Marseille. The map is densely engraved with information, with particular emphasis on the fortified cities, which are colored in red. Among the notable cities identified are Rodez, Narbonne, Montpellier, Ales, Nimes, Avignon, and Arles. The distance scale at bottom right incorporates a legend, identifying towns of various sizes, castles, and ports. A compass rose capped with fleur-de-lis appears in the Mediterranean. Condition: A dark impression with contemporary outline color on watermarked paper with light offsetting. (B+)
