A. Hey Eylant Rhodus [on sheet with] Platte Gront der Stadt Rhodus, by Olfert Dapper, from Naukeurige Beschryving der Eilanden..., published 1688, hand color (6.3 x 11.4"). This sheet features two striking views of Rhodes. At top is a bird's-eye view of the island with the north oriented to the right by a small compass rose. Numerous ships fill the harbors and surrounding waters. Below is a plan of the city of Rhodes that includes fine detail of its fortifications. Condition: A nice impression on a sheet with a coat of arms watermark. There is minor show-through of tape stains along the top edge and in the upper image at right, as well as a couple archivally repaired tears and a dampstain in the blank margins. (B+)
B. Harbour of Rhodes, by W.H. Bartlett, circa 1849, black & white (7.8 x 4.9"). This elegant steel engraved view depicts a scene along the habor of Rhodes. Figures congregate on the shore in the shadow of the impressive coastal architecture, detailed with great care here. Various vessels drift in the water. Based on a drawing by British landscape artist William Henry Bartlett, engraved by A.C. Warren, and published in Boston by Samuel Walker. Condition: A fine impression with a few faint spots in the wide margins. (A)
C. Scene in the Strada Mercanti, Malta [on verso] Port St. Nicholas, with a General View of the Harbor of the City of Rhodes, by Thomas Powell, from Illustrated Home Book of the World's Great Nations..., published 1888, black & white (9.3 x 6.1"). These engravings appeared in Thomas Powell's "brief but comprehensive account of all nations." On recto is a full-page engraving of a bustling market scene in Malta, engraved by Curtis. The verso features a half-page engraving (9.1 x 4.0") of the tower and fortifications of St. Nicholas in the city of Rhodes. Condition: On a lightly toned sheet. (B+)
