This teaching tool was created by J. Middleton to instruct British students on the stars and constellations. Included are five charts of the sky, oriented to winter, spring, summer and autumn, that show the visible stars and constellations, with each constellation named. A legend shows the order of magnitude for the stars. Facing each of these detailed charts is the same view of the sky with only the stars shown on a black background, in order for the student to locate the constellations on his own. Tissue guards are included between each pair of maps. The atlas includes a preface by Norwich. Published by Whittaker and Co. and Norwich, Jarrold and Sons. Oblong folio. Hardbound in contemporary quarter red leather with tips over marbled paper boards, with red leather label on front cover with title in gilt.

The colored charts have light toning and occasional foxing. The black charts have light to heavy foxing, which is only visible in the blank margins and on verso. The tissue guards are lightly toned, creased and chipped. The front free-endpaper has extraneous creasing. The covers are worn with a number of abrasions and bumped corners.
