This handsome and uncommon view shows Tripoli, then a stronghold for the pirates of the Barbary Coast. The city's fortifications and architecture are depicted in impressive detail. In the foreground, numerous ships fill the waters, with one galleon firing cannons at right. The title appears in a banner floating above the scene. An alternate title runs across the bottom of the sheet: Tripoli Ville Considerable en Affrique sur les Cotes de Barbarie elle est a Present sous la Protection du Grand Seigneur et Sert de Retraitte aux Pirates elle Gouverne par une Espece de Republique. Engraved by Paris-based Antoine Aveline (1691-1743), known for his landscapes and views.
