This wonderful reference by Lucio Gambi takes an in-depth look at the Gallery of Maps in the Vatican, "the largest cycle of geographical images in Europe." Pope Gregory XIII commissioned the gallery in 1580 as part of an initiative to decorate the Vatican with fine art. The friar and geographer Egnazio Danti crafted the forty map frescoes which show the topography of Italy as well as views of major cities. Each of Danti's maps is shown here in full color. Originally published as La Galleria delle Carte Geografiche in Vaticano, this is the English translation by Paul Tucker. 208 pp. Hardbound in red cloth with gilt title on spine and an illustrated dust jacket.
