This tiny world map is a reduced version of Giacomo Gastaldi's map of 1548. North America is connected to Asia by a prominent land bridge and conversely the eastern coastline connects to Greenland and then onto Scandinavia. Below South America is a huge island of Tierra del Fuego. Loxodromic lines cross the map radiating from sixteen focal points and the sea is stipple engraved. The map appeared in an Italian version of Ortelius' famous pocket atlas that is often referred to as the plagiarized version of the Epitome. Printed on a full sheet of Italian text measuring 5.5 x 7.5".
