This cheeky map touts winter sports in New England and was created by John Held Jr., a self-professed man "who hates winter." The sizes and shapes of the states are very loosely drawn, so that attention is focused instead on images of various winter activities, such as dog sledding, ice skating, curling, skiing, ice hockey, snowshoeing, tobogganing, and ice fishing. This map was created to accompany an article on the Dartmouth Outing Club, part of which appears on verso of the western sheet. Dartmouth students are featured in the map skiing, playing hockey, and suffering from chilblains. One of Dartmouth's rivals, Yale, is shown as "coon skin boys." This map was published in the February 1929 issue of The Sportsman and includes a teaser for another of Held's maps to be published the following month. See lot 238 for the "surprise map." On verso of the eastern sheet is a photographic image of Long Key, Florida (hint, hint!).
John Held Jr. (1889-1958) was an American cartoonist who is best known for his 1920's portrayals of dancing (including the Charleston), driving, playing sports, and other popular activities of the era.
