This attractive plan of Amsterdam views the city from the northeast, across the IJ. It is based upon an earlier city plan compiled in 1662 by architect Daniel Stalpaert that reflected the city's expanding footprint to accommodate population growth. The plan shows in great detail the streets, canals, locks, city blocks, and a number of important landmarks. An impressive 288 streets and fortifications are numbered and keyed to columns flanking the map. Beneath the plan is a lovely bird's-eye view that is filled with sailing vessels, demonstrating the importance of Dutch trade at the time. The view is flanked by the coats of arms of the city with scenes of trade in the corners.
