This uncommon small map of Crete is nicely engraved with a flourishing, banner-style cartouche held aloft by the winged lion of St. Mark brandishing a sword -- the symbol of the Venetian government that ruled Crete prior to the takeover by the Turkish Empire. For his Nouvel Atlas, Leth made close copies of Jacques Chiquet's maps published in Le Nouveau et Curieux Atlas in 1719.
