A. Marocchi Regnum, by Mercator/Hondius, from Atlas Minor, published 1610 (7.4 x 6.1"). A very attractive small map of Morocco decorated with mountains, cities, and forests filling the land. The capital city of Marruecos (Marrakech) is prominently shown. The map is adorned with two birds perched atop a large strapwork cartouche. Latin text on verso. Reference: Van der Krogt (Vol. III) #8617:351. Condition: A dark impression with light show-through of text on verso and minor foxing. (B+)

B. Fessae, et Marocci Regna, by Ortelius/Vrients, from Epitome Theatri Orteliani, published 1601 (4.2 x 3.1"). This miniature map is oriented with north to the right and depicts the kingdoms of Fez and Morocco. Adorned with a strapwork cartouche. Latin text on verso. Condition: A dark impression on a clean sheet. (A)

This map was published in Filips Galle's series of Epitome, which first appeared in 1588. Galle was unimpressed with the maps in the Spieghel der Wereld, and therefore gradually replaced nearly all of them through the various editions of his Epitome. The new maps had simple double-lined borders and were widely copied by others. The plates were acquired by Jan Baptist Vrients circa 1600, who published three more editions in 1601 and 1602, retouching some of the plates and replacing a few more. By the time Vrients' 1601 edition was published, only 10 of the original maps remained. References: King (2nd Ed.) pp. 64-65 & 88-89; Van der Krogt (Vol. III) #8615:332. Condition: A nice impression.
