This handsomely produced volume is a facsimile of the Dutch edition of Waghenaer's monumental sea-atlas of Western Europe, first published in Leiden in 1584-85. In his introduction, R.A. Skelton posits, "In the history of mapmaking, the later 16th century is distinguished by two great achievements in cartographic synthesis: Ortelius' Theatrum Orbis Terrarum and Waghenaer's Spieghel. He goes on to say that "Waghenaer was, in a sense, the greater innovator." The volume includes 44 double-page black & white maps that are tipped in and pasted to binding strips. It also includes a functioning copy of the 3-part volvelle. This is the fourth volume of the first round in the great Theatrum Orbis Terrarum series of facsimile atlases. 256 pages. Folio, hardbound in gray cloth boards with gilt insignia on cover, title on spine, and an illustrated dust jacket.
