This view shows the very short-lived French settlement and fort founded in 1562 in Port Royal. The settlers were not successful, and abandoned the settlement the following year, making a very hard crossing back to England. The Spanish located the abandoned fort and obliterated it in 1564, building their own fort of Santa Elena on its ruins.
