A. Biscaia et Legio, by Mercator/Hondius, circa 1607 (7.0 x 5.2"). Charming little map of northern Spain covering the region from Aviles to the border with France and inland to include Zamora and Tordesillas. Title cartouche flanked with winged mermaids and strapwork distance scale. A fanciful little sea monster, with a bird's head and a fish tail, is shown frolicking in the Bay of Biscay. Latin text on verso, published between 1607-21. Condition: Marginal foxing. Manuscript page number and cardinal directions in blank margins.
B. Biscaia, Guipiscoa, Navarra, et Asturias de Santillana, by Mercator/Jansson, published 1631 (7.5 x 5.4"). This is an attractive small map of northern Spain and the Basque Country bordering France and the Bay of Biscay. The coastline shown covers from approximately Llanes to Bayonne in France and extends inland to include the cites of Valladolid and Zaragoza. It is decorated with title and scale cartouches. German text on verso. Condition: A dark impression on a bright sheet.
