This small map of the Mississippi (3.5 x 3.0") appears on a $500 bond issued by the Mississippi Valley Trust Co., headquartered in St. Louis. The map traces the course of the river and its tributaries and locates several nearby cities. St. Louis is depicted in tiny plan form. The bond is dated November 2, 1896, and was signed by "Francis X. Ryan." The Mississippi Valley Trust Company provided financial backing for various transportation and communications networks in the region and the St. Louis World's Fair of 1904. Its building, a two-story bank in the Beaux-Arts style that was completed in 1896, stills stands as a historic landmark in St. Louis to this day.
