A. The Old Northwest Territory, by F. Rentschler, circa 1936, printed color (16.7 x 22.1"). This fascinating map was issued at the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 and was published by The Northwest Territory Celebration Commission. The sheet features inset maps at bottom depicting how each state was formed, with insets at top showing the various Indian treaties that allowed settlement to extend west. The main map image is filled with historical notations and illustrations, and is decorated by a large compass rose. The verso contains the full text of the 1787 ordinance.

B. Northwest Territory Celebration - America's Start to the Other Sea - and to Her Unique Eminence Among the Governments of Mankind, by William Mark Young, dated 1937, black & white (17.3 x 23.3"). Another piece produced for the 150th celebration, this unfolded poster features an illustration of a Calistoga wagon going down a steep mountain trail to the Northwest Territory overlooking the Ohio River and the Great Lakes. Pioneers in coonskin hats accompany the wagon as a Native American on horseback watches from above. At the top is a copy of the Ordinance of 1787 with some of the signers off to the side. The left and right sides display the names of the six states which were to evolve out of this territory. The corners have portraits of Washington, Lincoln, and the two Roosevelts with a quotation from each about this territory. We found no past sales records and only 3 institutional examples on OCLC.

C. The Birthplace of the Northwest Territory, by the Marietta Northwest Territory Celebration Commission, published 1938, black & white (7.8 x 10.3"). This 61-page booklet was also issued in conjunction with the celebration, but its focus is on Marietta, Ohio, the first permanent U.S. settlement in the territory north and west of the Ohio River. The front cover of the magazine contains the same image as the poster above in a reduced format.
