This map of the Atlantic Ocean depicts the areas explored by Anthony Knivets, an English sailor who traveled with Thomas Cavendish in 1591 on a voyage to Brazil. After developing frostbite in the Strait of Magellan, Knivets was abandoned on a remote island, where he was captured by the Portuguese. Knivets was forced to work as a slave for many years in South America, but escaped and fled to Angola and eventually made his was back to England. Knivets' memoir of his travels was published by Samuel Purchas in his Purchas his Pilgrimage in 1613. An alternative French title appears below the map: Voyage Tres-Rare d'Antoine Knivet par le Detroit de Magellan... The map is surrounded by an elegantly engraved picture-frame style border, printed from a separate copperplate.

A nice impression on paper with wide margins and a fleur-de-lis coat of arms watermark. There is light soiling and toning and chipping along the bottom edge, all of it confined to the blank margins.
