This wall-sized geological map of Iceland was created by Thorvaldur Thoroddsen, who conducted the first full geological survey of Iceland. This map was a great improvement over previous surveys and maps, which were based on the work done by Björn Gunnlaugsson and Olaf Nikolas Olsen from 1844-49. A geologist and geographer by trade, Thoroddsen (1855-1921) traveled extensively around Iceland in order to prepare the map, guided by geologist Johannes Frederik Johnstrup for portions of his travel. A legend at bottom identifies numerous geologic types, as well as the locations of glaciers, hot springs, mineral springs, fossils, lava domes, and volcanoes. Drawn by H. P. Simonsen and published in Copenhagen by Axel E. Aamodts. Lith Inst. Printed on two sheets, joined as issued.
