This is the ninth installment of Hayden's Survey of the West. The 827 pages of text includes reports on geology (Peale, Endlich, Holmes and Mudge), topography (Wilson, Gannett, Chittenden and Bechler), and zoology, which includes J.A. Allen’s important “History of the American Bison.” The volume is filled with illustrations including approximately 70 plates (not collated), including many folding, and numerous figures. Bechler’s report includes a folding Outline Map of the Middle Park Region and the Eastern Rocky Mountain Slope (21.7 x 18.7”), which extends from Denver west to beyond Middle Park and shows excellent topographical detail and watersheds. The volume ends with A.S. Packard’s report on the Rocky Mountain Locust and includes 5 small folding “bug” maps of the United States. Hardbound in contemporary brown cloth with gilt title on the spine.

Contents are very good to near fine with pleasant light toning mostly in the text. Front hinge is starting to separate at top. Covers are worn with a small gouge on the rear cover.
