This is undoubtedly one of the most magnificent maps of the seventeen provinces of the Netherlands. It was first produced as a separately issued wall map in 1608 with figurative panels and re-issued (without the panels) first by Willem Blaeu in 1630 in his Appendix and in the present example with his son Johannes in 1635. The map is densely engraved with scores of cities and towns, forests, rivers and lakes along with elaborate decorative elements including three cartouches, warring ships, sea monsters, and fine compass rose. Blaeu's imprint is displayed above the distance scale at bottom right. Latin text on verso.
