This is a later edition of Johnson's atlas with re-engraved maps, each with lace-like borders. In addition to the normal complement of maps, this atlas contains several colorful thematic maps and charts by Arnold Guyot. With a very uncommon mountains and rivers plate that has the large double-page sheet vertically divided into five panels, each is entitled "Chart of Comparative Heights of Mountains, and Lengths of Rivers", one for Africa, Asia, South America, North America, and Europe. The Flags of the Nations map is particularly brilliant. Also contains the Civil War "Map of the Vicinity of Richmond and Peninsular Campaign in Virginia;" double-page plans of Boston, Philadelphia, and New York City; and the large "California, also Utah, Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona" map. Nearly complete with 67 of 68 maps including 48 double-page and 19 single-page sheets (missing only the double-page map of Texas). Includes a map of Philadelphia and Kansas/Nebraska that are not in the table of contents. Map page 14-15 is not present and is not called for in the contents page. Hardbound in quarter black leather over brown cloth with embossed gilt on cover and spine, gold on all foredges (T.E.G), and marbled end papers.

The maps are very good to near fine with some light dampstains in the margins of approximately the first 10 maps and some waviness along the sheet edges throughout. Text pages at the front of the volume have more pronounced dampstains along the sheet edges. Front marbled endpaper is tattered and separated, and the front hinge has fully separated from the text block. Covers are worn and the front board is bowed. Maps (B+) / Binding (C)
