A nice example of Mitchell's famous school atlas with 28 maps on 12 single-page and 5 double-page sheets. Most of the maps are dated 1839 except the Texas and Western maps are dated 1846. The Map of Oregon and Upper California has a very early mention of the Gold Region located between the Feather River and the American Fork but without the gold region inset that soon appears. Texas is in a large configuration with the stove pipe continuing through the Green Mountains. The double-page map of the United States features the large Oregon Territory filling the Northwest, shows Mexico in control of the Southwest, and locates a large area in Texas labeled "Herds of Buffaloes and Wild Horses." Hardbound with pictorial paper over boards. This is the second revised edition, published by Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co.
