"Between Mobile, Ala., and New Orleans, La., along the Gulf Coast, is a country the most picturesque in history and romance of any lapped by Mexican waters. It is the beautiful Gulf Coast of Mississippi..." So begins the copy of this 16-page promotional booklet issued by "The Old Reliable," Louisville & Nashville Railroad. The folding map attached to the back cover spans from New Orleans to Pensacola, with the railroad's route highlighted in bold red. Cities are represented with small illustrations. As the title suggests, the text in the booklet discusses the fishing spots along the coast and is illustrated with black & white photographs. Black paper covers with red title on front cover.
The Louisville & Nashville Railroad was chartered by the state of Kentucky in 1850 and grew into one of the largest operators in the south with over 6,000 miles of track in 14 states. Unlike many other railroads, the Louisville & Nashville Railroad was fiscally strong throughout its history and earned the nickname "Old Reliable."
