This fascinating dual-language chart shows the bay and port of Gibraltar, a strategic location at the entrance to the Mediterranean. In 1704, during the War of the Spanish Succession, an Anglo-Dutch naval force under the command of Admiral Rooke and Prince George of Hesse-Darmstadt captured Gibraltar from Spanish forces. At the end of the war, Spain ceded Gibraltar to the English as part of the Treaty of Utrecht of 1713. In 1727, during the Anglo-Spanish War, the Spanish attacked and instituted a lengthy siege on Gibraltar, but were unsuccessful and suffered a huge defeat, losing 5000 men while the British lost only 300.
This sheet shows the 1704 siege, with Gibraltar surrounded by Anglo-Dutch ships. Three insets show Gibraltar in relation to the Straits of Gibraltar, a panoramic view of Gibraltar and its citadel, and a bird's-eye plan of the fortifications of Gibraltar.

A nice impression with superb, full contemporary color, a bit of printer's ink residue along the border at bottom, and some binding holes in the top margin.
