Grigor Avagyan's exquisitely designed pictorial map focuses on Armenian architecture throughout history. It divides Soviet Armenia into regions and packs the landscape with illustrations of notable architectural achievements, with an extensive key at left that identifies the individual works. The map is surrounded by intricately rendered illustrations of churches, temples, fortresses, monuments, ruins, and elaborate high-relief sculptures. Self-folds into a tabloid-like sheet with the alternate title Carte-Guide Illustree des Monuments Architecturaux Historiques de l'Armenie Sovietique. There are more illustrations and an overview of the region's architectural history in French text on verso. Published in Yerevan. Avagyan (1928-2005) was the professor of geography at Yerevan State University and the Yerevan Institute of National Economy. In the 1990s, he transitioned into politics, serving in the Armenian Parliament in the immediate aftermath of its independence from the Soviet Union.
